Charitable Gift

Jan 18, '17:
The Maurice J. Cotter and Muriel J Scheahan Charitable Foundation Trust made a gift of $10,000 to the Physics Department. Dr. Cotter was a physics professor at Queens College from 1962 to 1991. He had a rich and varied professional life. He was a member of the team that designed the USS Nautilus, the first nuclear-powered submarine in the U.S. Navy. Also a dedicated art collector, he was an innovator in the field of neutron activation analysis of paintings, illuminated manuscripts, and documents. He developed the method of autoradiographic analysis using the medical research reactor at Brookhaven National Laboratory.  Now, through a $10,000 gift, Dr. Cotter will continue to make a positive impact on the lives of students. The donation is earmarked for the renovation of the physics department conference room, which will be named in his honor.

Gary Lofgren, the Senior Vice President of Halliday Financial and Trustee of The Maurice J. Cotter and Muriel J Scheahan Charitable Foundation, who made the gift available for the Physics Department notes that “Dr. Cotter would be pleased to see the physics department utilize this gift to improve its facilities so as to better share information with both colleagues and students.”
