Research Opportunities

“ It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it. ”
- Aristotle
There are many nation-wide undergraduate research programs available to undergraduate physics students, which usually provide a stipend and travel for participation.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) supports dozens of Research Experiences for Undergraduate (REU) programs. The National Institutes of Standards and Technology (NIST) organizes a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program. C-SURP is CUNY's Summer Undergraduate Research Program, which is a 10-week program.

Application deadlines to these programs begin in the Fall. Undergraduate students are highly encouraged to read about the research opportunities and apply!

In addition, the Queens College physics faculty will collect applications for students interested in participating in department research.  The deadline for applying is first Monday after spring recess each year.

The application must be sent via email to Professor Luat Vuong with the subject [QCP Summer Research] Last name, First name, where Last name, First name is the name of the student applying.

A complete application includes a cover letter and resume/CV.  In the cover letter, students should express:
  1. research interests (did you attend any of the lab tours organized by the Physics Club?  what courses do you like?  what are your goals?)
  2. any work experience (not necessarily related to physics).

A resume can include coursework or prior projects that have been completed by the applicant. The applicant need not necessarily be a physics student, but the motivation should be clear in the cover letter.
